Corona virus does not spread from pregnant women to infants - study

Pregnant women suffering from coronavirus have no risk of spreading the fetus. This claim has been made in a recent Chinese study. The study was published in Frontiers in Pediatrics. The study has been conducted by researchers from Hujhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan. This is the second research in a month to confirm that the virus does not reach infants from pregnant women.

Wuhan is believed to be the epicenter of the corona virus epidemic in Hubei Province, China. It has affected more than 3 lakh people worldwide and killed more than 14,000 people. The subject of the study was four corona virus patients who gave birth to children at Union Hospital in Wuhan, which falls inside the university.

All infants were initially placed in the neonatal unit. No infant showed any severe symptoms associated with the corona virus, such as fever or cough. Three out of four had tests for infection after a sore throat, while the mother of a fourth child did not allow for the test.

According to the report, one infant had minor breathing problems for three days, while two others had rashes that disappeared on their own. Researcher Yellen Liu said in a statement accompanying the study, "We are not sure that the rashes were due to the corona infection of the mother."

According to the team, all four babies are healthy and their mothers are also healthy. Doctors in China have been cautious and people who were diagnosed with the virus shortly before giving birth have been separated from their newborns for two weeks. These babies have been fed formula and appear healthy.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising similar measures, but not the UK RCOG. Researcher Obrienne's team is collaborating with the UK Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health. He said, "If you separate mother and child, you lose all the benefits of bonding and better breastfeeding."

Obrien said, 'The Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health noted that the benefits of keeping the mother and the child together reduce the risks of the mother giving birth to the child.'

Initial reports suggest that the virus does not pass from mother to baby through breastfeeding. But health officials are advising mothers who are infected with the virus to wash their hands and wear face masks to be cautious while breastfeeding.

In fact, people who recover from the virus before giving birth will develop antibodies against it and may give some protection against the virus by breastfeeding their children. In this way, such children may technically be the first to take any type of vaccine against the virus.
