Many people have a habit of sleeping in the afternoon. They do not miss the opportunity to take a nap as soon as they get a chance during the day. But, according to a recent research, sleeping in the afternoon of aged people invites many diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. According to the researchers, this condition is called hypersomnolence, according to which, after sleeping for seven or more hours at night, one still sleeps during the day. This can cause problems for some people and may affect the daily work done.
Side effect of sleeping during the day
Study author Maurice M. Ohioan from Stanford University in the United States said, "By focusing on this state of sleep in older people, doctors can detect and prevent further health conditions." These aging people and their family members will need to closely monitor their sleeping habits to understand the potential risk of a more serious condition. 'In this study, 10,930 people took part and about 34 percent were 65 years old or older. He was older than that.
Researchers interviewed these participants over the phone twice in three years for this study. In the first interview, 23 per cent of people above 65 years of age said that they were excessively sleepy. In the second interview, 24 percent spoke of excess sleep. 41 percent of these people described their sleep as a chronic problem.
In the first interview given over the phone, the participants who reported having sleep problems increased the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes by 2.3 times after three years. In this interview, those who said not to sleep, did not have this danger. Researchers say the risk of cancer also doubled among participants at risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
In the first interview taken on the phone, 840 participants reported sleep problems and among these 52 people, 6.2 percent got diabetes compared to 74.2 people who never slept during the day. At the same time, 20 out of these 840 people, 2.4 percent were found to have cancer compared to 21 people i.e. 0.8 percent who did not sleep during the day.
Researchers said that those who reported sleep during the day during both interviews had a 2.5 times higher risk of heart disease.
The risk of connective tissue and muscle problems such as arthritis, tendinitis and lupus increased by 50 percent among those who reported sleep only in the second interview. Researchers found that the extent of this study was dependent on recall, rather than on quality, of participants' total time to sleep.
Side effect of sleeping during the day
Even in the state of hypersomnia, people get plenty of sleep in the afternoon. Even in this condition, sleep continuously at night and nap with it during the day. However, it is not uncommon for a patient of hypersomnia to spend 16 hours of sleep in 24 hours.
